The Vintage Yellow Bronze St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal medal keeps two friends together, one on each face. The front shows Francis de Sales bearded and balding within a rayed nimbus, a pectoral cross at his breast, lettered S. FRANÇOIS DE SALES Doct. DE L'EGL. P.P.N. — Doctor of the Church, pray for us. The portrait is unusually particular, more likeness than type.
The reverse gives Jane Frances de Chantal in the veil and habit of a Visitation nun, hands folded, named S.te J.ne FRANÇOISE DE CHANTAL P.P.N. The two founded the Order of the Visitation together at Annecy in 1610, he as her director and she as its first superior, and their long correspondence is among the gentlest writing in the Catholic tradition. He taught that holiness belongs to ordinary life and ordinary duties, and she proved it. A single medal for the pair is exactly right.
