Inside an openwork scalloped frame, a haloed Virgin in a stiff conical mantle holds the Christ Child on her arm and floats above a band of waves. Beneath her, three small figures ride in an open boat. This is the yellow bronze casting of the medal, warmer in tone than the darker bronze.
She is Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, patroness of Cuba, remembered for the three men caught in a storm in the Bay of Nipe who found her statue riding the water unharmed. Her shrine stands above the old copper mines at El Cobre, and Cubans at home and far from home have kept her image ever since as the protector of anyone in rough water. The relief is shallow and softly worn, as it is on an image that has been rubbed by thumbs for generations.
