The arms of the Vintage Yellow Bronze Flower Bud Openwork Crucifix are cut through and filled with curling tendrils, each rising to a closed bud, and the foot flares into a large fleur-de-lis. Nothing on the cross is a finished blossom: the whole thing is caught at the moment just before opening. The corpus hangs at the crossing, head inclined, modeled simply so the openwork carries the eye toward him.
That idea, growth held at the point of opening and set around the figure of Christ crucified, is the heart of the design. The hymns of Holy Week treat the cross the same way, calling it the tree that bore the fruit of salvation, and the fleur-de-lis at the foot brings Mary's lily into the same design. The warm yellow bronze deepens in the recesses and keeps the tendrils bright, so the piece carries the color of old gilded metal.
