The Vintage White Bronze Garden Lily Crucifix is covered in flowering lilies. A full open bloom rests at the end of each arm and again above the head and below the feet, while stems and pointed leaves twine along the shaft behind the slender corpus, the head fallen to the right.
The lily belongs to Mary and to Easter. It is the flower Gabriel carries at the Annunciation and the flower heaped on altars on Easter morning, the sign of purity and of the risen life. Setting it over the whole of the cross reads the Passion forward into the Resurrection, so that a crucifix becomes a promise as much as a memorial. The antiquing gathers in the leaves and leaves the petals bright, and the piece keeps the softness of a garden rather than the severity of a crucifix.
