The St. Michael medal sets a winged figure in a short military tunic and cuirass squarely at its center, standing on a small mound with a long shaft raised across one shoulder and a shield held at the other side, a stylized blossom rising on either hand. Around the whole runs an openwork oval of scrolls and clustered berries, so the piece reads almost as a small grille.
Wings and armor together are how St. Michael has been shown since the earliest Christian art: the archangel who casts down the dragon, captain of the heavenly host, invoked in the old prayer as a defense in the day of battle. He is patron of soldiers, of police and of the sick, and of anyone who wants a guard at their shoulder. The antique original is an eighteenth-century Paris piece.
