Two hearts lean together at the center of this small scalloped bronze disc, each crowned with a tongue of flame and one of them crossed by a narrow blade. Straight rays fill the field behind them, and a twisted band runs around the border, reading as plaited rope or as a wreath of thorn depending on the light.
They are the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, set side by side as devotion has always shown them. The flame is his love for the world, the blade the sword Simeon foretold would pierce her soul, and the rays behind both are the grace that comes of the two together. Their feasts fall on consecutive days, and countless families have consecrated their homes to the two hearts at once. At three quarters of an inch the whole devotion sits in the palm of the hand.
