St. Teresa sits in a small round medallion at the heart of this broad rosary center. Around her the metal is pierced right through, so the pattern reads as line rather than mass: long scrolling stems, a fleur-like crest at the top, and sprays of little drooping bell flowers filling the shoulders.
The whipping curves and the lily-of-the-valley bells belong to the art nouveau taste of the turn of the last century, when rosary mountings were made with real jeweller's ambition and the center was expected to be the finest thing on the strand. Teresa is a name the Church has given to its great teachers of prayer, and a rosary center is a fitting place for her: the point where the beads gather, where one decade ends and the next begins again. At an inch and three quarters the openwork keeps the piece light and lets the light through behind her.
