The Vintage Bronze St. Michael Pilgrimage Pendant is the most finely cut piece in this group. The front is filled by the archangel standing in a long belted robe with a rayed halo behind his head, a tall cross-staff in one hand and a slender measuring rod in the other, and a column of abbreviated Slavonic letters running down beside him in the way an icon names its figure.
The reverse is given entirely to text: seven lines of Church Slavonic set between panels of scrolled ornament, a prayer cast into the metal rather than any picture at all. That is a very Eastern instinct, to let the words themselves be the image. The teardrop form belongs to the pilgrimage pieces carried home from Slavic shrines, small enough to keep close on the road and made to be held as much as seen. Michael is the guardian of travellers and the defender in every hard passage, which is why this shape and this saint go together.
