The St. Joseph the Worker medal is a bold, close-cropped portrait. The head and shoulders of Joseph fill the whole field, bearded and balding, seen in profile; his fist closes around an upright carpenter's tool, and behind him a workbench frame and the toothed edge of a saw put the entire workshop into a few lines. The legend SA JOSEPH curves over his head.
This is Joseph the craftsman rather than Joseph the foster father, the patron whom workers, carpenters and heads of households have long claimed as their own, honored each first of May as the man who taught a trade to the Son of God. The abbreviated Spanish lettering reads simply St. Joseph, and the antique original came out of the Spanish devotional trade, whose strong, almost graphic modeling the casting keeps intact.
The St. Joseph medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
