The Vintage Bronze St. George Medal shows the saint on a rearing horse, driving his lance down into the dragon beneath him, ringed by the legend S GEORGIVS EQVITVM PATRONVS, Saint George, patron of horsemen. The reverse turns to water: a small boat riding heavy seas with a figure aboard, and around it the words IN TEMPESTATE SECVRITAS, safety in the storm.
The two faces make one prayer. The rider is guarded on the road and the traveller is guarded at sea, and medals of this pattern have long been carried by people who move for a living, horsemen first, later drivers and sailors and anyone setting out. The lance and the dragon are George's fixed attributes, the courage that rides straight at what everyone else runs from. Both legends are cleanly cut and fully readable on this casting.
