The St. Gabriel the Archangel Button shows the archangel standing frontally, his wings spread to the edge of the disc, his arms lowered and slightly open, his robes falling in deep folds to the rim. Along the lower edge, in raised capitals, runs S. GABRIEL O.P.N.
The abbreviation is Latin: Sanctus Gabriel, ora pro nobis, Saint Gabriel, pray for us. Gabriel is the messenger of Scripture, sent to Daniel, then to Zechariah in the temple, and then to Mary at the Annunciation with the greeting that opens the Hail Mary. He is invoked as patron of messengers and of everyone whose work is to carry news that matters. The open-handed pose here is that of a herald a moment before he speaks, which is precisely the moment the devotion turns on.
