The St. Francis Jerusalem Cross medal sets a Franciscan scene inside the great cross of the Holy Land, with a small cross pierced clean through each of the four quarters. A haloed friar in a knotted cord habit stands with his hand extended over a second friar kneeling before him, tall lilies rise on either side, and rocky ground with low foliage closes the picture below.
Along the top edge runs the single word JERUSALEM. The Jerusalem cross is the badge of the friars who have kept custody of the Holy Land shrines for seven centuries, so this is a pilgrim's piece as much as a saint's medal: the sons of Francis keeping watch at the places where the Gospel happened. The knotted cord at the friar's waist is the Franciscan habit's own reminder of poverty, chastity and obedience, and the lilies are the old emblem of purity.
