On the front of this medal a tonsured friar with a halo reaches up to embrace the crucified Christ, who leans down from the cross toward him. It is Francis of Assisi, held by the one whose wounds he carried in his own body at the end of his life.
The other face is filled with eight lines of Italian, the blessing Francis wrote out for Brother Leo: Il Signore ti benedica e ti custodisca, the Lord bless you and keep you, may he show you his face and have mercy on you, may he turn his gaze toward you and give you peace. A Tau cross is set into the last line, the letter Francis used as his own signature and traced on the walls and doors of the brothers, and a small emblem sits below it. It is a blessing meant to be given away, which is why it was cast on something to wear.
This Saint Francis medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
