St. Christopher wades forward across the Vintage Bronze St. Christopher Clover Medal, the Christ Child riding on his shoulder with one hand raised, the saint leaning hard on a tall staff and his cloak sweeping back with the current. The four lobes carry the setting around him: water breaking at the foot, a shoreline and a small sail at the right, a kneeling figure watching from the left.
The legend gives Christopher as a giant who carried travelers across a river until one child proved heavier than the whole world, and then told him why. From that night comes his name, Christophoros, Christ-bearer, and his patronage of travelers, drivers, sailors, and anyone setting out on a road whose end they cannot see. Few medals are asked for as often, and none carries its meaning more plainly in the picture itself.
