Product Details

The Yalalag crucifix is one of the great folk forms of southern Mexico: arms that flare and splay outward, hatched with fine parallel strokes, a small pierced loop at the end of each side arm, and a foot that spreads into a flared base. The corpus is worked in low relief straight down the shaft, the head bowed and the legs drawn together, modeled rather than carved in the manner of village casting.

The form takes its name from Yalalag in Oaxaca, where crosses of this shape have been made and worn for generations, and the antique original behind this piece dates to the eighteenth century. Its proportions are unmistakable once you have seen one: a cross that reads as much like a figure with outstretched arms as like a geometric shape. At an inch and a quarter this is the smaller of the family, easy to wear every day.

The small Yalalag crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
