The small Mexican cross pairs two shapes and needs nothing else. The cross has notched, budded arms, and from the foot of the shaft hangs an open heart cut clean through the metal, its point turned down. Nothing else is worked into the metal, and nothing else is needed.
Cross above and heart below is a favorite of Mexican folk silversmiths, and it says in one object what devotion to the Sacred Heart says in words: the love of God shown in the Passion. The outline is frankly irregular, as hand-worked forms are, and the surface has been left unpolished so the antiquing settles into the low places. It is the smallest piece in this group, light enough for a child to wear or to carry loose in a pocket, and plain enough to belong to anyone. Small pieces like this were the ordinary devotional currency of Mexican village workshops, made by the dozen and kept for a lifetime.
