The Vintage Bronze San Marcos Medal shows the evangelist seated low on rocky ground, an open book across his knee and one hand raised toward his head, caught in the pause before writing. Plants and stones fill the field below him and SAN MARCOS is arched above.
Mark wrote the second gospel, the shortest and the most urgent of the four, and tradition makes him the companion of Peter whose preaching he set down in Rome. He is honored as patron of Venice, where his relics rest, and of notaries and glaziers, and his symbol among the four living creatures is the winged lion. The Spanish form of his name places the original in the Spanish-speaking world, where medals of this kind were worn plain, the reverse left smooth.
