The Vintage Bronze Rococo Scrollwork Crucifix carries the corpus of Christ on a cross given over entirely to ornament. Pierced C-scrolls curl through every arm, beaded along their outer curves, and a small shell fan opens directly above the head of Christ the way a canopy opens above an altar. Light passes through the piercings, so the cross sits lighter in the hand than its two inches suggest.
Scrolled crucifixes like this one were made across Catholic Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the crucifix at the end of a rosary was worn as openly as any piece of jewelry and made to be looked at. The exuberance is deliberate: the ornament is there to honor what it surrounds, drawing the eye inward along every scroll to the figure at the center. Hand antiquing holds the darkness down in the recesses and leaves the raised scrollwork bright.
