The Vintage Bronze Praying Angel Cross carries a winged cherub head at its crossing and, just beneath it, a pair of hands folded in prayer. Each of the four arms flares out into a fleur-de-lis, so the whole cross reads at a glance as a flower opening around the angel at its heart. The reverse is scattered with small raised bosses that catch the light.
It is an unusually tender treatment of the cross, and one that has always suited a child's first cross or a gift marking a beginning, a baptism or a first Communion or a name day. The guardian angel keeps watch at the shoulder of whoever wears it, and the joined hands beneath say plainly what the piece is for. There is no lettering; the meaning is carried entirely in the modelling. The fleur-de-lis terminals and the cherub head belong to the French devotional tradition.
