Our Lady, Untier of Knots takes her name from an old German painting of the Virgin loosening a knotted ribbon, and the devotion has spread widely from Latin America in recent decades. The knots are the tangles in a life that no one can loosen alone: an old quarrel, a habit, a situation with no visible way out. The lettering is Spanish and clear. The figural face reads Madre de Dios, Mother of God; the face with the hands reads Madre nuestra above and Protegeme below, Our Mother, protect me. Patience is the point of the image: the hands are not tearing at the knots, they are working them loose.
