A softly lobed oval medal from an antique Argentine original, its front given to Our Lady of the Rosary. The Virgin stands in the stiff, bell-shaped mantle familiar from dressed Spanish and South American statues, a rayed crown about her head, framed by a plain border that four small florets break at the compass points.
The reverse carries no image at all, only six lines of lettering above a laurel spray: COFRADIA DE NTRA SRA DEL ROSARIO, PARANA, E. RIOS — the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Rosary at Paraná in Entre Ríos, Argentina. Medals like this belonged to the members of a parish rosary confraternity, men and women who bound themselves to pray the rosary together, to walk in its processions and to see one another buried. The softened edges of the original are the mark of someone who kept that promise for a long time.
