This Our Lady of Mount Carmel medal is cast in the outline of the statue itself, cut away around the figures. The crowned Virgin stands in a stiff conical mantle with the crowned Child held against her shoulder, both looking straight out, a small scapular hanging from the hand at each side. The pair rest on a low stepped base, the folds of the mantle falling in long simple ridges to the hem.
The dressed statue with a scapular offered in each hand is the Carmelite image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whose promise is bound up with the wearing of the brown scapular. The devotion goes back to the friars who took their name from Mount Carmel, where Elijah watched a small cloud rise out of the sea, and it remains one of the most widely kept of all Marian devotions.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
