The Our Lady of La Salette Medal tells one story across its two faces. On the first, a tall woman in a long robe and headdress stands in a landscape of trees with one hand raised, speaking to two children who look up at her. On the second, the same figure sits on a rock, bent forward with her face buried in her hands, weeping. The contrast between them is the whole point of the design.
Both are scenes from the apparition at La Salette, high in the French Alps, where in 1846 two young cowherds found a lady seated and weeping on the mountainside, who then rose and spoke with them at length before leaving them a message for her people. The weeping Virgin became the fixed image of that shrine, and no other apparition is pictured this way. Neither face carries lettering; the two child witnesses and the grieving posture identify the scene on their own.
The Our Lady of La Salette medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
