The large oval Guadalupe medal carries the image within a scalloped outer border. The Virgin stands with her head inclined and her hands joined in prayer, her mantle falling around her, the whole figure set in a dense field of rays that fills the oval from edge to edge. Beneath her feet lies the crescent moon, and at the base a small winged figure holds her up.
This is the image left on Juan Diego's tilma at Tepeyac in 1531, when the Lady asked that a church be built there and sent a poor man to the bishop with an armful of roses in his cloak. She has been honored ever since as patroness of Mexico and of all the Americas. No lettering appears on the medal, and none is wanted; the image has carried itself for five centuries.
The Guadalupe medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
