This unusual medal is cut as a six-pointed star, the points filled with fine chevron hatching so they read almost as rays. One face holds a square panel of the Madonna leaning cheek to cheek with the Child, the tender image of NOTRE DAME DU BON CONSEIL, Our Lady of Good Counsel, with the abbreviation P.P.N. beneath. The other shows St. Rita kneeling before a crucifix with roses beside her, ringed by STE RITA PRIEZ POUR NOUS.
Both legends are French, and both ask the same thing: pray for us, which is what P.P.N. stands for. The two devotions belong together, kept by the Augustinians and turned to in matters that look past helping. Our Lady of Good Counsel is asked for clarity in a decision that will not resolve; St. Rita, who received a thorn wound of her own, is asked for the impossible case.
The star medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
