This is the largest of the twin hearts pieces: an inch and three quarters of pierced quatrefoil built around two hearts lying interlaced beneath a five-arched crown, with a fleur-de-lis rising between them. Scrollwork, rosettes and small flower clusters fill the frame, and the ground is cut away throughout, so a substantial medal stays light to wear.
Two hearts crowned together are the customary emblem of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the joint devotion has a long history in French households, where the two hearts were set over a doorway or at the head of a bed. No lettering appears anywhere on the casting; the imagery has always spoken for itself. Worn alone it reads almost as an ornament, which is a good part of its appeal.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
