Product Details

The Vintage Bronze Ornate Ecuadorian Crucifix is worked with equal care on both faces. The front carries the corpus beneath a flame-shaped finial, the arms opening into ribbed, fan-like blossoms. On the reverse the figure gives way to ornament, the same cross filled with combed, ribbed foliage running the length of the shaft. Both faces finish below in a wide openwork foot of scrolls and pierced hearts.

Colonial Andean silversmiths finished the back of a crucifix as fully as the front, on the understanding that a cross is never really hidden. Turned in the hand, laid on a table, held through a long prayer, every side of it is seen. The flowering arms carry the old idea of the cross as a living tree, blossoming out of the wood of the Passion, and the hearts pierced into the foot answer the corpus above them.

The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an eighteenth-century Ecuadorian original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
