The Openwork Calvary Crucifix is a whole scene rather than a single cross. Christ hangs at the center beneath a titulus lettered INRI, and a veiled figure keeps watch on either side with hands folded at the breast. A frame of C-scrolls opens all around them, crested above with a fleur-de-lys and finished below with a small trefoil.
INRI abbreviates the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered fixed above the cross. Calvary groups like this one stage the whole of Good Friday afternoon: not the crucifixion alone but the small company who stayed at the foot of the cross to the end, keeping watch when everyone else had gone. That is what gives the composition its quiet weight, and why it has been cast and recast for generations.
