The Old Colonial Spanish crucifix is built on a form the Spanish colonies used for two centuries. A broad fan of rays opens behind the head of the corpus, the arms and the top of the shaft finish in small ornamented tablets, and below the feet the shaft ends in a crescent of beaded laurel that turns up at both points. The corpus is long-limbed and simply modelled.
Crosses of this pattern were made across New Spain in silver and in copper alloy, hung in houses and carried on the road, and the antique original behind this casting is an eighteenth-century piece. The rayed sun opening behind the corpus is the old sign of glory breaking through the Passion, so the cross holds the death and what follows it in a single shape.
The colonial Spanish crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
