Mary Undoer of Knots is shown here within an openwork frame of scrolls, the oval bordered by a length of looped and knotted rope. Inside it she stands in flowing robes, working patiently at a long ribbon that runs through her hands. The other face is plain but for the words PRAY FOR US in raised capitals.
The devotion grew up around a painting kept in Augsburg, in which Our Lady sits with a ribbon drawn from one angel to another, taking the tangles out of it knot by knot. Behind it lies a line of Irenaeus from the second century: the knot of Eve's disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary. People bring her the snarls that will not come loose on their own, in families, in work, in themselves, and ask her to work at them with the same patience. The knotted rope around the border is the reminder of what is being asked.
This rosary center was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
