The Vintage Bronze Madonna and Child Relief Medal is a small rectangular plaque. The Virgin fills the panel, veiled and haloed, holding the Christ Child against her shoulder with her cheek resting on his while he reaches up toward her face. Swags of drapery gather in the upper corners and a single star is set into the field above her shoulder.
The cheek-to-cheek embrace has a long history in Christian art, the tender pose that draws the two faces together into a single shape, the Child's hand at his mother's cheek while she looks past him toward what is coming. The plaque form and the drapery swags follow the small devotional reliefs of the Italian Renaissance, the kind of thing set into a wall niche or carried in a pocket. There is no lettering anywhere on the piece; the whole of it is carried by the modelling.
The Madonna and Child relief was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
