On the front of the Vintage Bronze Little Shepherd Medal a young shepherd sits on a rock in open country, a long staff upright in one hand, a sheep close at his feet and a tree leaning in from the left. It is a pastoral scene rather than a formal holy image, the kind Spanish workshops made as a keepsake for a child.
The reverse tells you who it was for. Around the rim runs the name LUISA MARIA VIDAL DOMINGUEZ, and across the middle, between small cast flowers, the date 2 DE MAYO 1901 — the second of May, 1901. A baptism, a first communion, a name day: the medal was made for one named child on one named day, and that is exactly what makes it worth reproducing. Behind the boy stands the oldest image of all, the shepherd who keeps the flock.
