The Joyous Nativity medal comes in close where most Nativity scenes stand back. A haloed child lies on a bed of straw with both arms flung wide open, and the great muzzle of the ox is lowered toward him from the right. No crib, no kings, no procession, only the child, the straw and the animal's warm breath, close enough to hear.
Those thrown-open arms carry the whole feeling of the feast: Christmas met as welcome rather than as pageant, and, in the shape of the outstretched arms, a quiet foreshadowing of what the child was born for.
