Ivy runs over every surface of the ivy-covered crucifix, up the shaft, out along both arms and around the corners of each terminal, so that the cross looks like a living trunk rather than sawn timber. The corpus is slender and quiet against all that foliage, the arms stretched along the crossbeam, almost overtaken by the leaves that climb around him.
Ivy is an old Christian emblem of fidelity and undying life, an evergreen that clings and does not let go, and running it over the wood of the cross turns the instrument of death into something that has visibly come back into leaf. The low relief takes an antiqued finish beautifully, the leaves staying bright while the ground between them darkens, so the growth reads clearly even at a distance. It is a gentle crucifix, more about what comes after the Passion than about the Passion itself, and it wears easily every day of the year.
