This marquise medal draws the Immaculate Conception out into a narrow pointed oval. The Virgin stands on the globe with the serpent underfoot, rays falling from her open hands, small stars scattered across the field, the French invocation running the border and 1830 at the point. The other face shows a seated woman teaching a young girl from an open book, a winged cherub head beneath them.
The border reads O MARIE CONCUE SANS PECHE PRIEZ POUR NOUS, O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us, the words Catherine Labouré was shown in the chapel on the Rue du Bac in Paris in that year. Conceived without sin is the whole of the doctrine in four words, and the serpent beneath her foot is the promise it rests on. The 1830 belongs to the apparitions and to the first medals struck from them. The lesson on the reverse is the other half of a French devotional life: faith taught at close range, one child at a time.
