The Vintage Bronze Eucharistic Chalice Medal is a quatrefoil of unusual richness for its size, each of the four lobes pierced open at the edge so that light passes through the ornament. The upper lobe holds the letters IHS in a rayed roundel with a chalice and host directly beneath, and vine, grape and leaf fill the remaining lobes in close relief around a small flowering cross at the center.
The whole design is Eucharistic. IHS is the ancient monogram of the Holy Name of Jesus, and the chalice, the host and the vine together name the Mass, the true vine of the fifteenth chapter of John and the cup of the new and everlasting covenant. A medal like this was often given to mark a first Communion or a confirmation, and it still serves that purpose as well as anything made today.
The chalice medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
