This is a milagro heart, the flat votive heart left at a shrine in thanks or in petition, with a flame-shaped foliate crest rising from its top. The face is engraved rather than modeled: a lily on a long stem and a leafy branch crossing the whole width of the heart in one sweeping line, with a cursive monogram cut near the point by the hand that left it.
Milagros are the small metal offerings pinned to shrine walls and statues across Spain, Mexico and the American Southwest. A leg stands for a healing, a house for a home, and a heart for the whole of a life or the whole of a love. The surface between the engraved lines is left broad and softly polished, which is what gives the piece its quiet, worn character. Worn now, it carries the same meaning it did on the shrine wall: something asked for, or something given thanks for.
