This crucifix opens a fan of fine rays behind the corpus, so the figure stands against light rather than bare metal, a device borrowed from altar crosses and rarely handled this well at so small a scale. The arms are pierced and scrolled into foliage, and the foot flares out into a broad palmette.
Above the head, beneath a fleur-de-lis finial, the titulus is lettered INRI, the abbreviation of the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered fixed to the cross and left there for everyone passing by to read. It is the one inscription on the piece, and the design gives it pride of place at the summit, where the rays gather and the foliage falls away.
