The Vintage Bronze Christ Carrying the Cross Openwork Pendant is one of the larger pieces in the collection, and it is pierced throughout, so the design reads as a lattice of light and metal. Within the openwork frame a robed figure stoops forward under a heavy cross laid diagonally across the field, one knee giving way beneath the weight. The frame around him is built of scrolls, leaves and clustered fruit, gathered at the top under a small winged head and closed at the foot by a foliate finial.

The subject is the road to Calvary, the walk from Pilate's judgment to the hill outside the walls, and it became the great theme of the Stations of the Cross that Catholics have prayed through every Lent for centuries. The stumbling figure is the heart of it: the falls are what the Stations dwell on, and what makes the devotion bearable to anyone carrying something heavy of their own. Cast from a nineteenth-century original, it works as a pendant or hangs well on a wall, and the pierced ground keeps a piece of this size from feeling heavy.
