The Vintage Bronze Celtic Knotwork Crucifix, Large is nearly two and a half inches, and almost every part of it has been opened into pierced interlace. Bands cross over and under one another through the arms and the head in the Celtic manner, spirals scroll through the foot, and the slender corpus stands clear against all that open ground.
Knotwork of this kind comes out of the Irish and Northumbrian tradition, from the same hands that filled the great gospel manuscripts, where the endless interlacing line was read as eternity: no beginning, no end, no place where the thread can be cut. Set around the figure of Christ the argument is complete, the everlasting life won on the cross drawn in a single unbroken band. The antiquing settles into the crossings and brings the weave forward, and for all its size the piece stays light in the hand.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
