Two figures stand in shallow water on the face of the Baptism of the Lord Medal. The one at the right holds a long slender cross-staff and reaches across to pour water over the head of the other, who bows with his hands joined at his breast, while above them the field opens into light. Everything is modeled at a small scale, but the gesture at the center is unmistakable.
The long cross-staff belongs to John the Baptist, and the scene is the baptism in the Jordan, the moment the Gospels set at the beginning of Christ's public ministry, when the heavens opened and the voice named him beloved.
