The Vintage Bronze Virgin Mary with Lilies Medal shows the Virgin in profile, veiled and circled by a plain halo, with lily stems rising on either side of her inside a shaped frame of long Art Nouveau curves. The back carries a band of lilies across the top, with the field below left smooth and open.
The lily is Mary's flower, the emblem of her purity that the old painters put into Gabriel's hand at the Annunciation, and here a French designer working at the turn of the last century has drawn it out into the sinuous line that period loved. There is no lettering anywhere on the piece. The profile and the flowers carry the devotion by themselves, which is why this one reads as much like a piece of jewellery as a medal, and why it wears easily with anything.
