The Vintage Bronze St. Nicholas Medal sets a Gothic arcade into an oval field, and beneath it stands the bishop himself, haloed, in mitre and cope, his right hand raised in blessing and a crozier held in his left. Three small children rise from a wooden tub at his feet. Around the rim, between beaded borders, runs SANCTE NICOLAE ORA PRO NOBIS, Saint Nicholas, pray for us.
The children name him. The legend of the fourth-century bishop of Myra tells of three murdered and hidden in a brine tub whom he restored to life, and that is the scene by which artists knew him across Europe long before he became the gift-giver of Christmas. He is patron of children, of sailors and of anyone who gives quietly, and his open-handed generosity is what this devotion has always turned on.
