The Vintage Bronze St. Francis with Birds Medal shows the friar haloed in a habit tied with a knotted cord, standing among birds: one settling at his raised hand, a row of them along the ground at his feet, more gathered on a low wall at his right. The reverse is given over entirely to text.
Nine lines of raised Italian carry the blessing Francis wrote out by hand for Brother Leo, Il Signore ti benedica e ti custodisca, may the Lord bless you and keep you, may he show you his face and have mercy on you, may he turn his gaze toward you and give you peace. It is the blessing of Numbers put into Francis's own words, and the scrap of parchment he wrote it on is still kept at Assisi.
