The Vintage Bronze St. Martha Rosary Center with Lilies shows a haloed woman standing with her hands joined and her veil falling behind her, a small scaly beast crouched at her feet with its head turned up toward her. The back is a plain dished field crossed by a spray of lily and leaves.
The rim is lettered S. MARTHE and P P N, the French abbreviation of priez pour nous — Saint Martha, pray for us. The beast is the tarasque of Provencal legend, which Martha quieted with holy water and led away bound with her own sash, and it is the attribute by which she is nearly always known. She is the saint of the household and of everyone who keeps one running, the woman busy about many things while her sister sat and listened, and she has been asked to pray for cooks, servants and housekeepers ever since.
