The Vintage Bronze St. Martha Medal shows a haloed young woman standing with her hands joined before her breast, her hair bound with a fillet and a long veil falling behind her. Low at her side a small winged beast crouches with its jaws open, and her name runs around the rim above her head in raised letters: SANCTA MARTHA.
The beast is the tarasque, the river monster of Provençal legend that Martha is said to have quieted with holy water and led away bound with her own sash. She is the same Martha who welcomed Christ into the house at Bethany and said plainly that she had been left to serve alone, and she has been kept ever since as patron of cooks, housekeepers and innkeepers, the saint of ordinary work done for guests. A medal this size is the kind carried in an apron pocket rather than displayed.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
