The Vintage Bronze St. Jeanne Jugan Medal is given over almost entirely to a face. The portrait shows an elderly woman in religious habit, coif and veil close about a lined and unidealised face, the shoulder cape falling in deep pleats below. Her name is set into the field itself, JEANNE rising up the left edge and JUGAN running down the right, so the lettering frames the head.
The reverse carries a cursive line and a pair of dates, Sr Marie de la Croix, 1792-1879: Sister Mary of the Cross, her name in religion, and the years of a life spent gathering the elderly poor of Brittany into her own house. From that beginning grew the Little Sisters of the Poor, who beg for what they give away. She is honoured as the patron of the aged and the destitute, and of anyone whose work goes unrecognised.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
