French foundress (1572-1641), Burgundian noblewoman widowed at 28; under the spiritual direction of St. Francis de Sales co-founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary in 1610. Mother of three children whom she left in others' care to enter religious life. Canonized 1767 by Clement XIII.
