A small oval of the Virgin, standing with her hands lowered and open in the attitude of the Miraculous Medal, is set into a spray of five-petalled flowers, buds and curling leaves that open to either side. The flowers are cast in the round and the oval sits slightly proud of them, so she keeps her place at the center of the ornament.
The image comes from the vision given to St. Catherine Laboure in Paris in 1830, in which Mary stood with rays of grace streaming from her open hands. Setting her among flowers follows an old Marian instinct: the rose, the lily and the enclosed garden have all stood for her, and the rosary itself takes its name from a crown of roses offered a decade at a time. At half an inch, in warm yellow bronze, this center keeps a handmade rosary delicate and lets the beads carry the size.
