The Small Heart Scapular medal is a heart in miniature, carrying Christ half-length within it, haloed with rays, his hand raised to the Sacred Heart burning on his breast. The relief is cut deep, so the image reads clearly even at a scale small enough to close inside a fist.
Medals of this shape belong to the scapular tradition. In 1910 St. Pius X allowed the faithful to wear a small blessed medal in place of the cloth scapular, and the pattern that followed carried the Sacred Heart on one face and Our Lady on the other, so that both devotions were kept together against the wearer. That is the pairing this piece reproduces, and the heart shape makes the point before a word is read. It was made to be felt through cloth rather than looked at, the kind of thing a person touches without thinking during a long day.
